Call for Application: Youth for South Fellowship Programme, Deadline:30 November 2019

 

UNOSSC and its partners have developed a fellowship component entitled “Youth for South Fellowship” , under the Youth4South umbrella, which will offer funded opportunities to qualified young professionals and young scholars to undertake short-term research projects, pursue postgraduate degrees, and participate in exchange and training courses in areas including international affairs, international studies, development studies, public policy, public administration and management, international cooperation and South-South and triangular cooperation, at selected prestigious universities and research/technical institutes.

 

The Youth4South Fellowship (2020-2021) will be piloted jointly with the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China by providing scholarships to a number of established young professionals and scholars from developing countries. The scholarships will be according to the enrollment at the university or the institute, in line with existing China Scholarship Council (CSC) Chinese Government Scholarship schemes.

 

The Masters Degree Programme at the following selected host universities is now open for application.

Requirements

  • Comply with ALL requirements and terms of MOE Chinese Government Scholarship Program
  • Meets other admission requirements of the host universities to which the applicant has applied
  • Not a concurrent awardee of a Chinese government scholarship
  • Must be a citizen from a developing country. Nationals from LDCs LLDCs SIDs will be prioritized.
  • Must be below the age of 35 (exceptions may be accepted with strong justifications on a case by case basis)
  • Applicants must be recommended by government authorities, international organizations or inter-governmental Organizations

 

Required Skills and Experience:

Education:

  1. Holder of an undergraduate (bachelors) degree in economics, international development, public policy, public administration, social science or related fields and preferably with strong communication skills is a minimum requirement for China Agricultural University, Peking University, Fudan University
  2. Holder of an undergraduate degree (bachelors) degree or research/professional background in engineering, biology, chemistry is required by Tongji University.
  3. Holder of an undergraduate (bachelors) degree in economics or management is required by Shanghai University of International Business and Economics.

 

Language:

  • Proficient in English is required. (i.e. must possess an IELTS score of at least 7.0 or a TOEFL score of at least 100 points)
  • If proficient in any other languages, please specify
  • Proficiency in Chinese will be an asset

 

* Proficiency in Chinese is required for Masters programme with Shanghai University of International Business and Economics. Applicants who passed Chinese language test HSK level 6 are eligible for the programme. Applicants who passed HSK Level 4 can still be accepted with precondition to take one year Chinese language classes before they start their major.

 

Work experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience in research and/or working in sustainable development, social sciences or related fields is required
  • At least 1 year of relevant professional experience in the areas of international development cooperation from respective Ministries/IGOs and Sector/technical cooperation agencies highly preferred
  • Work experience may be considered equivalent for fellows with PhD or Masters degree

 

Application Procedure

Step 1- Applicants complete online application by visiting CGSIS (Chinese Government Scholarship Information System) (Visit http://www.csc.edu.cn/studyinchina or http://www.campuschina.org and click “Scholarship Application for Students” to log in). Online submission of the application is compulsory for each applicant by completing the application information and uploading all necessary supporting documents.

Step 2- Applicants prepare the application documents according to the “Nomination package” indicated below and upload all the required documents into the online application system as indicated above.

Step 3- Applicants submit the application package together with relevant documents required by hosted universities to UNOSSC, through nominating agency partners, as required before the deadline. UNOSSC will do initial screening of the qualifications of all applicants and provide the list of recommended recipients to the Ministry of Education/China Scholarship Council (MOE/CSC) through the Permanent Mission of China to the UN in New York.

Step 4- Fully recommended applications by nominating agencies, UNOSSC and MOE/CSC will be forwarded to host universities for placements.

Step 5- The CSC will only offer scholarships to final applicants who are accepted by host universities. CSC reserves the right to make necessary adjustments to the applicants’ host universities.

 

Nomination Package (List of application documents)

This package should be shared with the “YouthforSouth” Fellowship focal points in UNOSSC by 30 November 2019 by email to youth4south@unossc.org

  1. Proof of submission to the CSC Chinese Government Scholarship online system.
  2. Applicants CVs (with most updated contact information indicated).
  3. 2 recommendations are required: one from the nominating agency; the other from the applicant’s academic institute.
  4. Copy of National Passport valid for the duration of the programme.

 

Key Deliverables

  • Upon submission of the application, Y4S fellows will have to present their interest in pursuing the Masters degree programme and how they wish to go back to their home country and promote South-South cooperation and scaling up of good practices.
  • During the course of the 1-year or 2-year programme, they will submit to UNOSSC progress report every semester (template attached) approved by relevant academic advisor.
  • During the course of the 1-year or 2-year programme, they will submit their performance and results every semester to UNOSSC.
  • By end of the programme, produce outcome reports with lessons learnt, challenges, opportunities with workplan they foresee in scaling up good practices in their home country and their work context (approximately 25 pages).

The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) launched the “Youth for South: Advanced Youth Leadership Programme” with several partners including SG Youth Envoy Office, CISSCA, FC-SSC, IFAD, NOREC, UNFPA and the Zayed International Foundation for the Environment in 2017 which aims at facilitating capacity development for established youth leaders from developing countries to learn and adapt South-South and triangular cooperation knowledge and tools in scaling up Southern development solutions with the objective of bringing sustainable development to their home country and local communities.
