Regional South-South Focal Points Retreat, Bangkok, Thailand, 14 December 2018

Ms. Deirdre Boyd, UN Resident Coordinator delivered the opening remarks

Twenty participants drawn from UN Agencies, Intergovernmental Institutions, and UNOSSC (Asia-Pacific Partners) from civil society and academia participated in the one-day Retreat organised by the UN Office for South-South Cooperation Office (Asia-Pacific).

Ms. Deirdre Boyd, UN Resident Coordinator in Thailand opened the Retreat and underlined that, “As we prepare for the BAPA+40 Conference, it is important to bring not just countries but also other stakeholders on board. The key part of making this work would be the actual operational guidelines for South-South cooperation. We need new policy and guidelines. These are the things we will see and discuss today.”

Mr. Jorge Chediek, Director and Envoy of the Secretary-General on South-South Cooperation noted that the UNOSSC Asia-Pacific office wills to be “A Centre of Innovation on South-South Practice”.

The UNOSSC Asia-Pacific Team briefed the participants on a range of issues including 2018 achievements and milestones, UNOSSC Funding Windows; the latest on the Second UN High-level Conference on South-South cooperation; and the zero draft of the regional workplan. Each session was followed by rigorous discussion. The participants had opportunities to share their South-South initiatives, opportunities and challenges.  Twelve institutions, namely, the All-India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI), ASEAN University Network (AUN), ESCAP, UN-Habitat, ILO, International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation under the Auspices of UNESCO (ISTIC), Mekong Institute, UNAIDS, UNCDF, UNDP, UNOPS and UNV took up the opportunity to present their South-South activities.  The participants expressed appreciation for the consultation and hoped that a similar discussion would take place after the Second High-level UN Conference on South-South cooperation. The Retreat ended with a strong call for an Asia-Pacific Regional side-event on science, technology and innovation with a focus on the Industry 4.0 at the BAPA+40 Conference.
